“So what happened with Tessa?” Dillon asked with a sideways glance.

It had taken a lot of work to pull myself together, walk up to my old high-school buddies, and ask for a ride home. I think I did a pretty good job of acting like nothing was wrong and Dillon had immediately and happily offered to drive me home.

I scrambled to come up with an acceptable lie. “She had a family emergency.” Seeing his raised brows of concern, I quickly added, “Nothing too serious, just something she had to leave to take care of.” I licked my lips, hoping I sounded convincing. My heart still raced uncomfortably from before. “I thought I’d just ride home with my neighbor, so I told Tessa to go on without me. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to talk to my neighbor before he left. So, here I am.”

“Worked out perfectly, if you ask me. I’m glad I got the opportunity to rescue you from the Amish event.” He smiled broadly and I worked up a weak smile.

Miriam’s voice and face still swirled around in my head. I had no doubt that she had put serious moves on Rowan. After all, he was a handsome man from a quality family in the community ‒ a prime pick for any Amish girl. I couldn’t stop the slow burning simmer that I was experiencing from head to foot, but I tried to think rationally about everything. I cared about Rowan, probably more deeply than I had any business to after such a short time, but our relationship was hopeless. The entire plan of trying to make nice with Rowan, convince him and myself that we were simply friends, had backfired on me completely. I’d gotten so caught up in the heat of the moment that I hadn’t been able to stop myself from getting lost in Rowan. The way he kissed me was different to how I’d ever been kissed before. His touch was all consuming, as if he was trying to absorb me into himself. It was overwhelming and, if I had to guess, a passion I’d never experience again in my life. But it was wrong ‒ all wrong. I had no business leading him on. I realized his feelings had been hurt and that was why he’d lashed out at me with angry words. Hell, I did the same thing when I was riled too. He was an honorable guy, and he deserved to have a chaos-free life with an Amish woman in his own world. I just wished the girl didn’t have to be Miriam.

Dillon turned into the driveway, slowing down to navigate around the fallen branches that still hadn’t been moved out of the way. He whistled when he saw the downed tree. Rowan had sawed up a large portion of it that morning, but the main part of the tree’s trunk still lay sprawled over my pickup truck.

“Have you talked to the insurance company yet?” He parked in the only space where the tree didn’t touch and shut off the engine.
